After serving families in NYC as a birth doula for the past three years, I am taking some time off from the "on call" lifestyle to be with my new little family. I am currently offering classes in Childbirth Preparation and Prenatal/Postpartum Support. As I slowly but surely start my own educational path toward Midwifery, I am glad to offer mentorship, education, and connection with expecting women and families. I believe in the nature of birth, the strength of women, and the value of strong support during the amazing transition to new motherhood.
Childbirth Education
My goals as a childbirth educator are for women & their birth partners to gain confidence in the body's process of labor and birth, an informed awareness of common practices, policies, and interventions for a variety of birth settings, and a connectedness to the potential for a creative, positive, and meaningful birth experience.
I offer seasonal small group classes and private birth preparation sessions in your home upon request.
Classes will discuss the physical & emotional changes that occur during pregnancy, our culture of birth, options and choices for labor, birth, and postpartum care, relaxation and comfort measures for labor, the process of birth, creating a vision or plan for your birthing day, avoiding unnecessary interventions, birth partner guidance, and the transition moving forward into in the postpartum & newborn period.
I have experience with homebirth, intervention-free hospital birth, epidural-assisted births, VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), as well as planning a positive Cesarean birth experience when medically indicated. I advocate for the normalcy of birth but also respect and honor the differences that may arise.
Postpartum Support
Postpartum doulas nurture new families. Birth can be a huge and transforming event, and many families
find the newborn period to be equally overwhelming. In traditional societies, women are surrounded before after birth by the women of their family and village, providing cultural wisdom and guidance through this experience. Doulas come into the home of the new family and fill the space of the experienced and knowledgeable "village" that our culture is lacking. We provide evidence-based education about this changing time, support breastfeeding, demonstrate early parenting skills, support the new organization of the home life, and help each member of the family transition into their new roles in a way that encourages future independence and greater bonding.
I am a DONA Certified Birth Doula, DONA Trained Postpartum Doula, and trained as a Childbirth Educator through Lamaze International and Passion for Birth, as well as in Birth Art exploration through Birthing from Within. I have attended workshops on natural childbirth & maternal health with midwife Ina May Gaskin.
Believing that all families should have access to education about the birth experience, I am open to payment plans and bartering. Please contact me for more information, to sign up, or to be put on my mailing list for upcoming classes.
